South Tyrol - or Alto Adige in Italian - is since remote times border land between North and South Europe. For thousands of years emperors and kings are trying to win the other side of the Alps. Deep, hidden valleys were difficult to reach and only a few passes guaranteed in the summer months the passages. This way tradition and language often survived and they are still to see today.
In the last century - after the two world wars - the nowadays South Tyrol was gone to Italy, Tyrol, the northern part of the region, left to Austria. Contracts and political cleverness made it a Euroregion - still conserving their old culture. The
Val Gardena - or Val Gardena in Italian - is, like many other valleys, still holding old traditions. So also the woodcarvings.
Carving the wood meant once filling long, cold evenings in the winter time and some spare money for the normally poor life. Used since the late 17th century altars, sacral figures, crosses and much more were shipped to churches in over all the world. That is also the family Dolfi. Our manufacture in Val Gardena, South Tyrol exists for generations and all workers are specialized.
